Full Text

The Central Railroad. The pressure upon the Central Railroad Company for the transportation of government or army freight, which of course must have precedence, operates oppressively upon the public, by arresting the transportation of supplies in either direction. Prices of butter, etc., are consequently high in the city, as are groceries, etc., in the country. The only relief, it seems, which the railroad company can or does afford, is to refer persons desiring to send freight to the "Express Company," who have a special engagement with the railroad company to carry packages for them, in a private car attached to the passenger train! The Express Company charges whatever price it pleases for the transportation of freight, and thus people are reduced to the alternative of not sending any freight at all, or sending it upon the payment of exorbitant charges, through the "Express Company," who enjoy privileges not accorded to anybody else, because they relieve the railroad company of all responsibility for the loss of or damage to any article sent over the road, in their charge. This subject needs the attention of the Legislature, soon to assemble in this city.
