"On the night of the 23d of December, 1830, at 11 o'clock, a fire broke out, which, at 5 o'clock in the morning, had destroyed five squares of the best part of the city, comprising 47 houses. The loss is estimated, in goods and property, at two millions, in which some of our English and American houses have suffered very much. The place is in a terrible state--no business whatever is doing. No one thinks of recovering their debts, as the fire is an excuse for those who owe. Houses are very scarce and rents very high. The English and French Consuls have their houses filled with the sufferers. The Custom House escaped without injury.
"To add to this distress, we are in a state of revolution. Gen. Flores has returned to Quito, and made a counter revolution, and is now marching against Gen. Urdaneta, with three battalions. The latter has about the same number of troops, and we expect daily to hear of a battle."
