GEN. ALGER IN TOWN.

He Was Early Up at the Fifth Avenue Hotel and Early Away from the Corridor.

Gen. Russell A. Alger, the Michigan millionaire and one of the pillars of the Republican party in the present campaign, arrived at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, accompanied by his son Fred, about 9 o'clock this morning.

The General has been hovering around this city for a month or more, dividing his time between visiting with his family at a summer resort on the Jersey coast and running into town just to get a hint on politics.

He came direct from Washington this morning, however, where he attended the funeral of Gen. Sheridan, who was a warm personal friend of his.

Gen. Alger has not at all the disposition of a recluse, and this morning he seated himself, shortly after his arrival, on one of the blue plush settees in the hotel corridor, and was "at home" to any one who cared to call. He did not remain there long, however, and Clerk Carr, who informed an Evening World reporter that the General was not in his room, said he "must have been carried away by some admirer."

It is not unlikely that the early birds at the Republican headquarters received a call from a large man with a broad smile and an easy-going manner, who might be taken for the Mayor of a prosperous country town. But he was not so. That was the General.
