Full Text

Deceptive Ballot Box.

The Mayor of Lipsheim (in the department of the Lower Rhine) was recently tried, found guilty, and condemned to the penalty of "degradation civique," in consequence of too successfully tasking his inventive powers. He had invented and constructed a ballot box, with a double bottom, in which he was in the habit of putting fictitious bulletins, or votes, prepared by himself. When the voters had deposited their Bulletins, the touching of a spring caused the false bottom to fly up and conceal the genuine ones, leaving only those that were fictitious to be counted! This trick is, it must be admitted, considerably in advance of either the ingenuity or the rascality of the New World.
