NATIONALIST ARMY PUSHES TO SEA IN VICTORIOUS DRIVE

HENDaye, April 13 (UP)—Nationalist troops, renewing their drive to cut Barcelona off from Valencia and Madrid, battled their way today to a point 12 miles from the sea in the region of San Mateo.

The Nationalists made their new advance south of Tortosa despite strong Loyalist resistance. Nationalists announced they had taken the towns of Cati and Chert and were within two miles of San Mateo on a front of approximately 10 miles.

In the north, they claimed a strong Loyalist offensive against the Balaguer sector had been stopped. Nationalists, using tanks in place of shock troops, broke the Loyalist line north and south of the San Mateo-Valencia highway, at the villages of Canet lo Roig and Cati. Their net advance was but 1½ miles. However, John de Gandt, United Press staff correspondent with the Nationalists, reported that as he watched the battle from the hills he could see the Mediterranean plainly, only 15 miles to the east.
