W. A. Tondro, prominent El Centro businessman, has accepted the chairmanship for the El Centro Red Cross chapter's war fund campaign which opens March 1 with a quota of $22,000 for the El Centro chapter, which includes the Imperial and Holtville branches.
The Red Cross was the only agency not included in the Community War Chest drive last fall, the national Red Cross each year having its own campaign in March.
Of the quota, $11,500, or 52.3 per cent goes to the American Red Cross for its services for American servicemen overseas and for the prisoners of war as well as for other national services. The remaining $10,500 is spent locally for Red Cross services for servicemen and their families primarily, the El Centro, Holtville and Imperial groups each having submitted budgets for their work. With so many military installations, the work in the valley has grown tremendously and increased local budgets were necessary.
Imperial branch has accepted a tentative quota of $1,500 and Holtville, $1,875, leaving El Centro the balance of $18,625 to raise.
Tondro will meet with the chapter officers and drive workers Friday night, in the chapter headquarters, to map out preliminary plans for the campaign.
