Serious Burglary.--On the 28th ult. the store of Capt. H. W. Child, (collector of taxes) was broken open by a villain, whose evident intention was, to appropriate the municipal treasures to his own use and behoof. The money however, was in another place! and Mr. Thief took an old thin coat--stuffed the ample pockets with old rate bills and crackers,--helped himself to a bottle of "ardent," and then with a few shillings which he collected from various corners and crevices of the strong box--made off. But it seems his success was unsatisfactory. How true it is, that "the more a man has the more he wants"!!! The next evening, he made an effort to break down the door of Mr. Samuel Wheaton's store; it fortunately, for the owner, either proved too strong or the gentleman, or some nocturnal wanderer passing by alarmed him --for the morning revealed no other consequences than a damaged lock. On Thursday night, operations of the same sort commenced by forcing the tool chest of Mr. Charles Luther. Here the thief armed himself with chisels, and proceeded to the vicinity of Mr. S. Child's Jeweller's shop, Being a little too early in the evening, he was discovered and taken into the shop, interrogated--and set at liberty. His story was contradictory and unsatisfactory, but Mr. C. took him previous to the commencement of any overt act of violence on his premises, and did not feel authorized to detain him during the night. Mr. Luther's chisels were found, next morning, on the spot where Child first saw the stranger standing.-- They were thick framing chisels, fit for wrenching, &c.
