A SONG;
Adapted and addressed to a People like
who were first called Christians, at Antioch—
wherever such a people may be found.
THE shades of the dark night, are flying
away,
The day spring darts down from on high :
The music of spring, and the fair dawn of days
Salute now the east, and the eye.
The SAVIOUR appears! long expected and
sought!
To retrieve our sad fall, and our loss;
To be our salvation, by righteousness wrought;
Compleated by him on the cross.
His life, full of wonders, now draws to a close
What sorrows, what pains he reliev'd !!
His works pleas'd his Father but made men
his foes—
Their malice his death soon atchiev'd.
All goodness of men, and their works most
had admir'd,
Human righteousness, all appear'd dress
When Jesus the just one, a victim expir'd
And finish'd his work on the cross.
See from the dark mansion the conqueror comes!
By energy new and divine ;
Many saints in his train ; who burst from the
tombs,
In bodies celestial to shine.
For works thus approv'd, thus highly regarded.
Well may all things be counted but loss !
Man's sentence revers'd, and Jesus rewarded,
Speak peace to the vile from the cross.
Here then let us rest ; here's laboure
anchor,
Our firm who's alive evermore ;
For hope built on self, no longer let's hanker:
But trusting obey, and adore
No more let us turn from His work all divine,
On the billows of error to toss;
Made righteous by Him, all his People will join
To glory alone in his cross.
