LONG-SHOT NABS FIRST IN MIDGET AUTO RACING

Taking advantage of a "break" that tangled the leaders, Bob Douthitt Tuesday night slid across the finish line in first place in the semi-monthly midget auto races at the fairgrounds.

Frank Hetzel, who with Hobe and Claude Herrick did the best driving of the evening, landed in second position. Pike Meadows was third and Claude Herrick fourth. Hetzel and Claude Herrick were out in front, apparently certain to finish one-two in the main event, when their machines tangled in a thrilling turn and allowed Douthitt his chance.

In a "grudge" race that threatened to steal the show from the main event, Frank Hetzel nosed out Claude Herrick at five laps. The trophy dash went to Hobe Herrick, five laps at 1:36.4. Frank Hetzel won the first heat in 1:35 and Hobe Herrick took the second in 1:33.4.

Rain in Arizona and San Diego prevented the appearance of out-of-valley drivers.
