The Count Eclipsed the Noble Deed of a Kind Father.
"Papa is so noble," said Angeline Sere de Sere as she caressed the fringe of her jeweled fan and looked into the patrician face of the young Count Hocko.
"Your esteemed father impresses me as both generous and kind," replied the young nobleman. "You were about to speak concerning the matter of dot."
"I was indeed" continued the fair young woman, "and in the matter of dowry pap is kindest and noblest of all. Fearing that you might be tempted by pecuniary considerations and that I might be deprived of a pure and unselfish love, he has decided to give me nothing as a marriage portion, and-"
"I cannot," added the young patrician, "deprive one so good of the love of an only daughter. The sacrifice is great, but I were less a man if I insisted upon marriage. I bid you farewell."
And the young count, dissolved in tears, went out into the bitter night.
