Full Text
At a recent meeting at the State House on the subject of "Home Education,"
Hon. Amasa Walker said the first step in education of a child should be to teach him the value of money. If he does not learn the value of it before ten years of age, he will never learn it, probably. There is only one way to teach a child the philosophy of money. That was to make him go to work and earn a sixpence. It was the only standard of a proper education, and from such a standard the success of our Appletons and Lawrences and other millionaires could be measured. The next duty in order in the child's education was that of accumulation. It was a duty to lay up money. It was written by the finger of God in nature. It was a duty to accumulate, and for this reason, unless capital increases with the increase of population, labor must be starved.
