Gen. Wu's Troops Drive Manchurian Armies Beyond Great Wall.
Peking.—The Manchurian armies of General Chang have been defeated and driven beyond the Great Wall in the bloodiest battle of the present civil war, according to telegrams reaching here from Chingwangtao.
General Wu's headquarters have admitted that the casualties are too great to estimate.
Heavy Losses on Both Sides.
It is reported that both sides have lost many men and at Chiumen Pass alone, it is declared that 10,000 were killed. A Russian battalion fighting with the Manchurian forces lost 200 men in one day. General Wu reports that he is preparing to take the offensive all along the front and, with naval aid, will execute a flank movement which will compel the surrender of a large portion of the Manchurian army under General Chang's son.
Japan May Have to Act.
The Central government troops number about 148,000 on the front with 40,000 more assembling. General Chang has been unable to send more than 100,000 men to the front. It is expected that the fighting may be carried into Manchuria and there Japan will be forced to show its hand. It has been indicated that Japan will intervene, should General Wu's army show progress, but not otherwise.
It is reported at Mukden that many of the Peking divisions originally destined to be taken to Chingwangtao by sea, have been arriving at the front by train for the last two weeks. The plan to bring them by sea was abandoned because of stern Japanese opposition.
