"Our ships contemplate a general move shortly. So says report, and it is believed they will go from this to Havana. I learn from a private letter written at Norfolk, that the frigate Potomac will return to the Gulf again so soon as she is repaired, bearing the broad pennant of Com. Perry. It is by no means the intention of the Navy Department to diminish the Home Squadron, as the state of our relations with Mexico demands a greater increase of the number of ships than heretofore wanted. I learn that the Navy Yard, under the command of that energetic officer, Com. W. K. Latimer, is advancing with great rapidity in all the necessary improvements.— There are many extensive buildings going up, and in twelve months more it will be a yard of considerable importance. The General Court Martial convened at this place for the trial of Lieut. Russ adjourned yesterday. I learn that the evidence adduced could not possibly affect Lieut. Russ in the least."
