HERSHEY CALLS REJECTION RATE FOR SERVICE "APPALLING"

WASHINGTON - Selective Service Director Major General Lewis B. Hershey said the "unreal shortage" of men for the armed forces has been created by competition among them for recruits and described the current rejection rate "appalling." in testimony before the Armed Services Subcommittee.

Of a total of eight and one-half million men, 15 per cent were rejected as physically or mentally unfit.

Hershey also ordered state draft boards to try and fill their February quotas with last men 21 years old.
