MUNICIPAL GOSSIP.—On dit that the Radical cohorts, hitherto divided, are gathering in united force for one grand charge upon the city government. Until a recent date, Bowen and Jenks were in the field for Congress, and there was a bare possibility that the Democratic nominee might run in between the two and carry off the bone of contention. Bowen's party felt a grudge against Jenks for opposing their leader, and they were taking their spite out of him by supporting a candidate for the Mayoralty in opposition to his patron, Pillsbury. Here, again, was a ghost's chance for the Democrats. But it is said now that Jenks withdraws his opposition to Bowen, and Bowen withdraws his opposition to Pillsbury, and Pillsbury, to compensate Jenks for his devotion, promises to make him City Treasurer. This makes Pillsbury so cock-sure of his election that, in the plenitude of his power and the fullness of his heart, he promises the office of Chief of Police to three different individuals, each of whom has the satisfaction of knowing that he has made the same promise to the two others. Hoyt, the wagon-master of King Sickles, is one of those happy individuals who has been favored with one ticket in three for the office of Chief of Police. It is also said that Senator Sawyer, whose great abilities are not entirely engrossed with the national Senate and revenue, has condescended to dip his finger in the little municipal pie. Having a friend afflicted with a longing desire for the big plum which Pillsbury imagines that he already feels under his thumb, the honorable senator proposed to the black man's candidate that, if he would withdraw from the contest for the Mayoralty in favor of that longing friend, he would use his influence in obtaining for him the United States Revenue Collectorship. But Pillsbury was too old a bird to be caught with chaff. He knew that the collectorship did not belong to Mr. Sawyer, but affecting that he did, he exclaimed, in grandiloquent style: "Sir, I would rather be Mayor of Charleston than President of the United States!" Such was the town talk yesterday.
