LETTER FROM JACKSON, MISS.
Jackson, August 30, 1878.
Editor Morning Star:
It is painful to contemplate the sad consequences of the last two week's visit of the fever plague to our neighboring cities, the number of happy homes that have been made sorrowful by sickness or desolate by death. The sick and mortuary reports which continue to be received from Vicksburg, Granada and Memphis are heart rending in the extreme. May God stay His avenging hand and spare His poor people. We of this city have special motives to be grateful to Him for preserving us from the terrible visitation of the fever fiend. Our good priest, Father Picherit admonished us in good time that our only safeguard against the dread enemy was prayer and prudential avoidance where practicable. Thank God we have not had, as yet, one single case of the fever, and what is more we live in hopes that the yellow monster will not visit us at all.
Our city authorities deserve great credit for the prompt and energetic means they instituted, on the first approach of danger, to disinfect our streets and enforce rigid quarantine. The sanitary condition never better at this season of the year. The sanitation is excellent, (dread, nevertheless,) produced in the minds of our people by the alarming nature of the reports referred to have caused an unprecedented panic. Not one-fourth of the white population is left to encounter the enemy should he invade our gates; they are therefore scattered all over the country.
