PASCO, KENNEWICK AND COLUMBIA RIVER MEN LAUNCH IMPORTANT INDUSTRY.
PASCO, May 19.-To organize a company consisting of farmers and merchants throughout the Inland Empire for the purpose of building and operating a line of steamboats on the upper and lower Columbia river is the plan recently undertaken by several influential citizens of this city. "The rapid development of the irrigated districts of this state means the absolute necessity of better transportation facilities, and to this end we are diligently working," said Capt. W. P. Gray, one of the promoters of the proposed plan. "With the launching of this undertaking, the most important step in the great development work will be taken. We propose to operate a line of 10 or 12 steamers thus assuring a cheaper transportation for both passenger and freight traffic. "As the boats will be owned and controlled by those whose livelihood depends largely upon the cheapest transportation, the success of such an enterprise is practically assured."
