Full Text

A report of a very unpleasant nature was received in town this morning, by the Eastern Mail Stage. We earnestly hope it is without foundation, although the channel through which it comes is so creditable as to excite fears for its truth---Three of the passengers in the stage, with all of whom we have conversed, concur in stating, that just as they were leaving New-York yesterday morning, a packet arrived from Albany, bringing intelligence that an action had taken place between the Americans under Gen. Van Rensselaer, and the British, at Fort Niagara-that it continued during the greater part of the day, when the Americans were at length compelled to capitulate. The British loss amounted to upwards of 500 men; that of the Americans is not particularly stated. Eight hundred men laid down their arms. This news excited a strong sensation at New-York.
