Passenger Train Runs Into Open
Switch Causing a General
Jostle.
Yesterday the engine that was damaged by the collision in the yard at the depot Friday night was taken to the shops at Warrenton where it will undergo repairs. The accident was considerably more serious than at first reported.
The night train from Portland ran into an open switch, striking engine No. 3, that was standing on the siding, almost full tilt. The result was that No. 3 was sent flying a distance of 150 yards, being badly smashed up.
The passenger engine was backing in so that the rear pilot was knocked off and some minor damages resulted.
When the engineer felt his engine leaving the main track he threw the air brake lever into the emergency notch, the operation shaking up the passengers who had recovered from their surprise when the collision occurred.
This frightened them somewhat, but their fears soon passed over when nothing serious followed.
A newspaper man was not on the ground at the time of the accident and when the night man at the depot was interviewed at a late hour that night he gave out the statement that no collision had occurred, but as the train neared the depot the engine partly moved off the rails, but no damage was done.
There was doubtless a misunderstanding somewhere, but just where does not appear.
