Full Text

Extract of a letter from a traveller in Virginia to the Editors.

"LYNCHBURG, Va. July 20.

This is a delightful country, and may, with some propriety, be called the garden of Virginia. The harvest has been more than usually abundant. In passing through Albemarle, I paid a visit to Monticello; I cannot refrain from expressing the gratification derived from it. Its illustrious owner was from home: he was on a visit to his estate in Bedford. I was received by Col. Randolph, whose polite attentions could not fail making the deepest impression. The building is elegant, both in the architecture and finish, the beauty and taste displayed in the internal decoration, and the sublimity of the surrounding scenery cannot be surpassed. Nature and art appear to have united in its structure and embellishment, and to have presented it to the world as a production of their joint powers."
