GENERAL GRANT.
The grand forward movement of the army commenced on Thursday morning, although Sheridan's cavalry had previously gone forward upon the left, and other dispositions of troops had been made preliminary to the movement. It was originally intended to break ground two or three days before that event actually occurred, but a very heavy rain storm retarded operations and delayed the movement until Thursday morning.
The Fifth Corps advanced upon the left, causing the rebels to evacuate their outposts and fall back upon the second line. Passing on, they encountered strong column of rebel infantry, well posted, and a brief engagement ensuing, the rebels tried to force our troops back by a charge. In this they were unsuccessful, being handsomely repulsed by three batteries of United States regulars. In the evening the corps had reached a point in the ridge between Gravelly Creek and Hatcher's Run, near where the Second Corps had the desperate fight with the rebels last...
