John Jameson, Assistant General Superintendent of Railway Mail Service, arrived in Helena this morning, and is the guest of his brother-in-law, Captain Thomas P. Fuller, United States Collector of Internal Revenue. Mr. Jameson is on a special mission under instructions from his chief, Superintendent Thompson, to investigate recent complaints originating in Oregon with respect to negligent mail service on the Northern Pacific between Helena and Portland, and to-morrow continues his journey through to the Pacific coast. From personal inspection made and information gained over the road to this point, Mr. Jameson is satisfied that reports reaching Washington of ineffective postal service have been exaggerated, and what cause there is for complaint west of Helena he will presently undertake to find out, and if it exists will see that the proper remedy is at once applied. The accumulation of unworked mail passing its destination and piling up by the scores and hundreds of sacks in the Portland postoffice, of which the telegraph recently informed us, was occasioned principally by the transfer of all Washington Territory, Oregon and British Columbia mail from the Union Pacific to the Northern Pacific route. For a few days the Northern Pacific was not fully prepared with mail cars of adequate room, and considerable quantities of news matter was carried in baggage cars, which the clerks were either in ignorance of or unable in time to reach and work. It is true, we think, that cars of at least sixty feet space will soon be if they are not now required for the Northern Pacific service, and probably an increase to some extent of the clerk force, or a re-arrangement of the postal runs between Bismarck and Portland.
We are glad to meet Mr. Jameson in Montana. The present is his first visit to the Territory. He has been long in the postal service, and in his sphere of action and duty is a most capable official. Socially he is as pleasant a gentleman as we have ever met within or beyond the Department. On his return from the west he will probably stop and visit with friends here for a day or more.

John Jameson arrived in Helena on a special mission to investigate complaints of negligent mail service on the Northern Pacific between Helena and Portland, following instructions from Superintendent Thompson. He conducted personal inspections en route and plans to continue to the Pacific coast. Mail accumulation in Portland resulted from transferring mail from Union Pacific to Northern Pacific, with temporary issues in mail car capacity and clerk access.
