Portland,
Monday, May 31, 1802.

Massachusetts Election,

Was held at Boston on Wednesday last, when the two branches of the Legislature were organized. A committee was then appointed to inform his excellency the Governor that a quorum was formed.

The Senate made choice of the Hon. David Cobb, President, and Geo. E. Thatcher, Clerk.

The House chose the Hon. John C. Jones, Speaker, and Henry Warren, Esq. Clerk.

To supply the vacancies in the Senate the legislature chose the Hon. Simon Frye, for York county--Hon. Isaac Thompson and Beza Hayward for Plymouth -and the Hon. Nathaniel Dummer for Lincoln, &c.

The report of the committee appointed to examine the returns of votes for Governor and Lt. Governor, stated that the whole number of votes for Governor was 49,583. of which his excellency Caleb Strong had 29,583, and is chosen-That the whole number for Lt. Governor was 46,386, of which his honor Edward H. Robbins had 28,317, and is chosen.

In the afternoon of the legislature proceeded to the choice Counsellors, when the following gentlemen were chosen :

Hon. Stephen Choate, John Hastings, Oliver Wendell, Salem Town, Beza Hayward, Ebenezer Hunt, Bezaleel Taft Nathaniel Marsh and Woodbury Storer-
A remonstrance was laid before the House on the return of Mr. Fessenden, as representative of Fryeburg.

York: Samuel Derby; Kittery, Adams: Wells, Joseph Moody; York Town; Buxton, John Woodman, Jr. to the Senate; Pepperellborough, Edward Cutts; Fryeburg, William Fessenden; 3. John Leighton; Sanford and Alfred; Coxhall, John Low; Biddeford, Aaron Porter.

CUMBERLAND.—Portland, Joseph Titcomb, N. Yarmouth, James Prince; Falmouth, Rufus Lewis: Gorham, Labran Lewis.—

What a numerous representation for a county as large as Cumberland!

LINCOLN.—Pownalborough, David Payson; Mark L. Hill; Woolwich, Peleg Wadsworth; Boothbay, Jonathan Ellis; Bristol, David McClure; Thomaston, Henry Knox; Joshua Shaw.

HANCOCK.—Belfast, Jonathan Wilson; Martin Kinsley; Frankfort, Abner Brown; Orrington, Joseph Carr.

KENNEBEC—Augusta, Samuel How. Winslow, Elnathan Sherwin; Hallowell, Thomas Fillebrown.

THE FIRST EASTERN DISTRICT.

Several trials have been made to elect a representative to Congress, without success—The Hon. Mr. Cook, has declined being a candidate. A correspondent has forwarded us the following nomination. It is also understood that Hon. Nathaniel Dummer, will be again put up on the federal list;—but it is hoped these gentlemen will not so far divide the exertions of the electors as to give an opening for the jacobin candidate.
