HIGHER EDUCATION.

The people of Brooklyn, New York, who have an ample school fund, complain that so much money is devoted to the higher branches that nearly one-half their children are deprived of primary school facilities. The same complaint is almost universal, and it is well founded. If the foundation is not properly laid the superstructure topples. A return to sounder principles is necessary. There is a great deal of nutriment in the words of the Philadelphia Record on this subject:

It is no part of the legitimate duty of Government to give anybody what is called a higher education. To attempt this is an especially gross wrong, when it involves as a necessary consequence the abandonment of the great mass of the children of the State to comparative ignorance.
