From the Constitutional Whig.
We have heard it urged in defence of Com. Stewart, that he had made only about $20,000 whilst others on the same station, had made 70 or 80,000. We ask if an American squadron was sent to those seas to enrich the officers, to oppress the republicans, to assist the royalists, and to disgrace the flag of the United States, or to give wholesome employment to the officers of our navy, and to protect the commerce of the United States in the Pacific? The question of innocence or guilt cannot be changed by the amount of the sums realized. For one, we shall not be silenced. We firmly believe that the dignity of the United States has been lowered by the conduct of the officers, civil and naval, on the coasts and continent of South America, and that our squadron in the Pacific, instead of affording countenance to the gallant Republicans of Chili and Peru, has assisted the operations of their royalist enemy. Until convinced that these impressions are erroneous, we shall not cease to contribute our small assistance in bringing the offenders to trial, and to procure the expiation which the honour of the national character requires.
