Yesterday a number of Merchants, Traders, and Inhabitants attending at the King's Arms Tavern, in consequence of the Advertisements for a General-Meeting, but the Gentlemen who had thought proper, by a subsequent Advertisement (in the Papers of that Day,) to forbid the General-Meeting, and who had assumed to themselves the right of resolving upon and framing an Address, brought in an Address previously signed by a very few, and laid it on the table to be signed by those who should approve thereof; whom many persons, at least equally disposed to testify their Loyalty and Duty to his Majesty, and their firm Attachment to our happy Constitution, being desirous of having a Chairman, that they might debate with Decency and Moderation the Propriety of the said Address, and its tendency to conciliate the minds of his Majesty's Subjects, insinuated therein to be so very necessary at this juncture, were with great violence opposed in that design; which occasioned much Tumult and Confusion. After some time Samuel Vaughan, Esq; being placed in the Chair, it was resolved, that a Committee of Nine should be chosen to prepare an Address, to be laid before the general meeting for their Consideration on Friday next, and a Committee was appointed accordingly.
