WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM AT A PICNIC.
Peter Dunham lives at Tremont, and is on the
eve of getting married. He took his intended to a
lager beer garden up there to show her a little of
the world before they settled down. A fight occurred on the grounds, and Peter saw the best place
for them was the dining-room. Peter and his intended went into the dining-room and had two
lager, and he was very unexpectedly knocked down
while his arm was lovingly encircled around his intended. Outside it appears there was also another
regular Kilkenny scrimmage, in which Patrolman
McKeon was knocked off his pins. When he got on
his feet again McKeon clubbed indiscriminately,
and left his mark at every blow; and when Peter
came out of the dining-room, wiping his smeller,
the officer charged him with being one of his assailants and arrested him. Peter was tried on the
charge of assaulting the officer.
Luckily he was able to prove the mishaps of that
day's courtship with his intended, as he called her,
and the officer's mistake.
The verdict was "not guilty."
Peter left the court arm in arm with his intended
mother-in-law.
