Action in Deals; Warning
Is Given to Be Prepared
By JOE REICHLER
MINNEAPOLIS Dec. 9.-(AP)-
News-starved baseball fans are hereby warned to get ready for some real action. The way things have been shaping up, at least a couple of "name trades are almost certain to be announced within a day or two."
Now that the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates have started the horsehide rolling with the Gustine-McCullough swap, the general feeling is the minor league convention will really start humming with big league deals.
The Chicago White Sox, busiest traders of the off-season thus far, make no bones about their hope of luring third baseman Bob Dillinger from the St. Louis Browns, first baseman Eddie Robinson from the Cleveland club, and pitcher Allie Reynolds from the New York Yankees.
The New York Giants want pitcher Johnny Vander Meer from Cincinnati. They have offered second baseman Billy Rigney. The deal is 'hot' right now. Ironically, the Reds tried awfully hard to swap Vandy to the Giants for Rigney last year, but were turned down.
The National League champion Boston Braves have been making overtures to Pittsburgh for outfielders Ralph Kiner and Wally Westlake, but have not gotten very far.
The Giants were all set to make an announcement yesterday, but changed their minds at the last minute. It is no secret they were after catcher Clyde McCullough and southpaw pitcher Cliff Chambers of the Cubs. However, when the two were traded to the Pirates for third baseman Frank Gustine and rookie righthander Cal McLish, it left the Giants out in the cold.
The Cubs recently exchanged outfielders with the Phils, giving up Bill Nicholson for Harry Walker
The White Sox have parted with veteran pitchers Joe Haynes and Frank Papish (to the Indians), outfielder Taft Wright (Athletics), and catcher Aaron Robinson (Tigers). They have acquired catcher Joe Tipton and pitchers Bob Kuzava and Ernie Groth (Indians) and pitcher Bill Pierce (Tigers).
