6 Merit Scholars Receive Awards From Labor Unit
WASHINGTON, D. C. Six more high school students graduating in June have been awarded AFL-CIO college merit scholarships, bringing to 24 the number of students so honored since the program was inaugurated in 1959.

Winners this year, from union and non-union families are: John Daniel Ferrell of Walnut Ridge, Ark.; Richard J. Hasher of Euclid, Ohio; Edward Matthew Holpuch, Jr. of Issaquah, Wash.; Paul I. Meyer of University City, Mo.; Mary Ellen Robinson of Hickory, N. Car.; and Paul C. Jefferson of Chicago, Ill.

Over the past four years seven girls and 17 boys have been winners of these coveted scholarships. Following the established custom, two scholarships were granted in each of three geographical sections of the country. The awards are made on a basis of competitive tests conducted annually by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a non-profit organization, with the final selection of winners made by representatives of the AFL-CIO from finalists qualifying in the 1961-62 National Merit Scholarship Program examination.

The AFL-CIO awards range up to $1500 per year, depending on the actual costs involved and the funds available to the student. The awards are subject to change if the family financial circumstances change during the year.
