SEAT OF THE MUSES.
IMITATION OF SWIFT
Our country's great support,
Returning home one day from Court;
His mind with public cares rose;
The country's business in his breast--
Observed a cake-wife in a stall,
And courteously on her did call.
Old R. was pretty well in case,
And showed it soon by his grimace
For the old man, if I dare say't,
Loves kissing better than his meat--
Squeez'd the old punk most lovingly,
Saying if I but dare make free
To act the part of an old friend,
I'd hug you o'er and o'er again.
Your husband is a good old buck-
None ever wish'd him better luck:
I love good house-wives, and their children,
And honest men, and all their brethren.
I have been with many losses vext,
And don't know where to turn me next--
Above a thousand pounds in debt,
I must in the new Congress sit;
A feast of money and of meat,
It suits poor me, at last, complete.
Six dollars per day, and honor too,
Suits poor old servants--apropos.--.
Your husband has a vote, I find:
Will you, dear Molly, be so kind
To speak a word for your old friend,
And upon you I will depend,
My junior rivals to defeat,
And get me a six Dollar seat;--
A compensation for past losses---
Old age, infirmity, and crosses.
Molly, her husband's better part,
Agreed she would with all her heart-
And when he found she had consented,
He bought some cakes and was contented:
* * * * * * and Molly had more Sport,
The story's long--but I stop short.
