Bulgaria.

The new principality of Bulgaria, according to the treaty of San Stefano, will comprise more than one-half of European Turkey. The territory detached from the Ottoman Empire, as nearly as can be calculated, will measure about 3500 square leagues, a surface double that of Belgium and Holland put together. The new principality, however, will not be so thickly peopled; with all its additions it will scarcely number 5,000,000 of inhabitants; that is to say, about as many as Belgium. And yet the old provinces of Bulgaria and Roumelia were the most populous, fertile and industrious that Turkey possessed.

A rather curious incident connected with the late war in the Orient is the petition to the Austrian government to take steps to obtain a satisfactory disinfection of the battle-fields of Bulgaria and Roumelia. The petition comes from the actuaries of the life insurance companies of Vienna! Odd as this looks, the chain of reasoning is perfectly natural and unimpeachable. The soil of those provinces is soaked with putrefaction, which, when the hot weather comes on, will infallibly aggravate the scourge of typhus which is already ravaging Southeastern Europe: the infection will be carried to Vienna and other parts of Austria, and increase the death rates; this will threaten the profits of the companies hence, naturally, their action.

So complicated a thing is Society!
