Explosion in Giant Brewery Cask Nearly Fatal to Three Workmen,
Special to Times-Republican.
Iowa City, Nov. 30.-Three men while varnishing the inside of a giant cask at the Iowa Brewery, were caught by flames and almost burned alive here yesterday afternoon. The explosion which started the fire blew one man thru the bunghole and the other two successfully crawled out and companions stopped the flames before the victims were fatally burned.
Joseph Soukup, Joseph Slavata, and Frank Stucker were the painters who were caught in the fire. The cask was 15 feet high and 10 feet wide. It has a capacity of 150 barrels. The breaking of an electric incandescent globe started the fire. The men were rushed to the university hospital nearby and medical attention speedily relieved their suffering.
