WASHINGTON CITY, June 6.

A misconception corrected.—When we stated a few days ago that the circumstances under which the frigate President sailed from Annapolis were such as to "justify the impression" that she had sailed for the purpose of obtaining the release of seamen impressed by British vessels of war, we had no idea of intimating that such was our impression; the remark was merely introduced to account for the belief existing at Norfolk and elsewhere that the firing which had been heard at sea had occurred between the President and a British frigate. The paragraphs which we copied from Norfolk and Richmond papers were grounded on this impression; and it was by way of accounting for it that we stated the circumstances under which the President had sailed. In a subsequent part of the same paragraph, we intimated the impression existing in our mind, that if such a rencontre had taken place as was supposed, it had probably proceeded from some insolence of a foreign cruizer, to which general instructions have been long since given to the commanders of our national vessels not to submit. This is an explanation we should not have dreamt of making, had not our meaning been perverted, and a construction given to it of which it was not fairly susceptible.

Nat. Int.
Commodore Rodgers, in repairing the mast of the frigate President, has discovered, that the shot from the British ship which struck them were 42 instead of 32 pounders as they were first believed to be.

ib.
We are informed that Walter Rodgers, the boy wounded on board the frigate, and who behaved with so much firmness, has been appointed a Midshipman in the navy of the United States.

Event Details

Correction clarifies that reporting on frigate President's sailing from Annapolis justified impressions of seeking release of impressed seamen and possible engagement with British frigate based on Norfolk and Richmond papers and heard firing at sea, but was not the reporter's own impression; suggests any rencontre likely from foreign cruiser insolence against U.S. instructions. Commodore Rodgers discovers shot size during mast repair. Wounded boy Walter Rodgers appointed Midshipman for firmness.
