160-Pounder Leads 'Cats' In TV Game

EVANSTON, Ill. - The American sports public, which loves an underdog hero, might find a new one Saturday when halfback Bobby McKeiver leads Northwestern against Stanford in a nationally televised game.

McKeiver is an oddity in this day and age when college coaches are looking for 200-pound halfbacks with the speed of 160-pounders.

McKeiver is 5 feet 4½ inches and has trouble reaching 160 pounds. But that doesn't bother the versatile star who last year was one of the big reasons Northwestern moved back into Big Ten football respectability.

McKeiver does everything. He is one of the finest defensive backs in the Big Ten despite his size. He is also Northwestern's No. 1 offensive threat.

Last season he led the team in rushing with 592 yards for a 5.2 average. He scored 38 points with four touchdowns, 11 extra points, and one field goal. He caught 14 passes for 171 yards and was the conference's top punter with a 39.6 average.

McKeiver didn't miss a game as Northwestern put together a 4-4-1 record and won its last three Big Ten games against Wisconsin, Purdue and Illinois.
