Jacobins Triumphant!
CAPTURE of SLUYS.
-AUTHENTIC-
BY a gentleman of undoubted veracity, who arrived in this town last Friday evening, from New-York, which place he left after the Mail, and came via Providence--we have the following agreeable Intelligence:
That Sluys, which was said in the last English papers to have been abandoned by the French forces who besieged it, had actually surrendered to the arms of the Republic. This important news was brought to New-York in a vessel from Hamburgh, which left that place the 10th of September last; a very short passage at this season, as she came through the North Seas.
The gentleman, our informant, further says, that he is well acquainted with the Captain of the vessel, and had conversed with him fully on the subject; and has no doubt of its authenticity.
He also informs us, that Rotterdam, a principal sea port in Holland, was besieged by the French Troops: who had burnt the Gun Boats, under the command of the celebrated Sir Sydney Smith, which were dispatched from England to the assistance of the Dutch.
The vessel from Hamburgh, was under the command of Capt. CHAMPLIN, and belongs to the house of MERTORRE and CHAMPLIN, of New-York.
The gentleman had with him at Newport and Providence, the Evening Papers of New-York, containing this interesting account, but in unpacking his chest he laid them on the table in his lodgings and unfortunately left them, very much to his mortification.
He further reports that Gen. PICH EGRU had been at Paris, and had returned to his command with orders from the Convention to pursue his operations with redoubled vigour.
It was reported on Saturday, on Change that the dates destroyed the credibility of the information, but the present account may be depended upon in all its particulars, as we have given them not without repeated inquiries and the fullest satisfaction. The gentleman lodges at Mr. Hall's, in Court-Street, and will leave town to-morrow.
Vive la Republique!
