Young men of Allen county were reminded this week by Joe D. Gooding, chairman of Selective Service Local Board No 2, that there is a continuing responsibility for men reaching 18 years of age to register under the Universal Military Training and Service Act.
Mr. Gooding emphasized that the young man is required to register within five days after reaching his 18th birthday. Those who are away from their homes at that time may go to any local board in the area where they are situated, and register there.
The draft board chairman called attention to the necessity for giving the proper home address because the address given will determine the local board having jurisdiction of his case at all times. It was further pointed out that registrants should be able to identify their township of residence or their ward number so their records will be properly identified.
Failure to comply with the law can result in a punishment of up to five years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, or both.
Registrants are also instructed to keep in touch with their local board as to change of address, marital status, birth of children and other facts that would change classification. Changes must be presented in writing, not telephone calls.
