Removing Another Restriction

To the credit of our city in which we take pride, it is pleasing to note that the Board of Aldermen has seen fit to repeal an ordinance of long standing which prohibited the hauling of passengers of a race other than the one designated in the license.

By this act, Atlanta is freed of a city regulation which for years has actually inconvenienced members of both races. It was also a handicap to anyone who might have been stranded down town.

The old ordinance had caused embarrassment especially to citizens and visitors coming into the airport.

While there may have been ample facilities in the taxi line for both races, it does not become a community such as ours nor the sentiments we are trying to mold as world models to have a publicly licensed carrier forbidden from serving certain citizens because of race.

It might be news to some, but Atlanta was lagging behind in this move. Some cities in south Georgia have long removed these signs and have permitted taxis to carry any passengers they could pick up. Thomasville, Georgia, might be cited as an example.

As time marches on, Atlanta is moving forward with it.
