Poll Tax Payments Pick Up Before Deadline Arrives

According to estimates from the treasurer's office, about 4500 persons paid poll taxes before the deadline Saturday afternoon.

A horseback appraisal is that Democratic payees were in the lead to the ratio of three to two.

Payments are nearly always light in years when state officers are elected. Probably twice the number could have qualified had they cared to do so.

Estimating that 2700 Democrats are eligible to vote in the August 2 primary, one might forecast a primary vote of 1800. The people in Virginia do not seem to have a great deal of interest in voting.

More than 800,000 poll tax payments were made in 1948, but less than 400,000 votes were cast in the presidential election.
