Full Text
There seems to be a disposition in certain wrong quarters to turn the protest against School Director Jones' ill judged and unjust remarks regarding the school principals, into a sort of persecution, and to make small potatoes political capital out of them.
With this effort we have no sympathy.
We were the very first to raise our voice against the injuriousness of his remarks. We no whit abate our protest against them. We in not the slightest degree abate the firmness of our advocacy of the principals' cause, either as respects their claim to higher pay or their indignation at the aspersions cast upon them. But we are not so unjust or illogical as to join in making Mr. Jones' error a lever to injure Mayor Wanser, or an excuse for reversing the verdict of twenty-six thousand voters.
We hope to see Mr. Jones apologize for what was improper in his speech like a man and a gentleman, and we believe the principals themselves will, like gentlemen, be glad to meet any advance on his part half way. As for the salary dispute, Mr. Jones may be wrong-we believe he is-but if he is conscientious, he cannot be blamed.
We cannot all be right always-or, at least, only editors can.
