The Governor's Message.
The Governor's Message to the Legislature is an electioneering document filled "chock full" of negro. His Excellency fries poor Sambo for breakfast, roasts him for dinner, and makes him into a hash for supper. The Governor is a much abused man by the Radicals, who have hunted him with "venom." His Excellency congratulates the assembly upon the restoration of the franchise to so large a portion of the people.
In 1864, a Message to the same body from the same pen, lauded the judicious policy which denied rebels that same right. The Governor must know that people have memories reaching back beyond three years. Hence we can only attribute such brazen effrontery to the utter shamelessness of the man, who is stamped all over with the imprint of the unprincipled demagogue. Gov. Swann wants to go to the U.S. Senate, hence his furious "pitching into the nigger," hence his puling complaint about the Radicals pursuing him with "venom!" Poor man! his rebellion record pursued him with such "venom" when formerly elected to the U. S. Senate, that he was afraid to present his credentials to that body. Take the Governor all in all, we scarce shall see his like again. He is perhaps the most unmitigated hypocrite and knave within the confines of the Union.
