An Extract of a Letter from a Magistrate of Amsterdam, Dec. 11.

Several Letters which have been received here from divers Places have mentioned a Resolution said to be taken by the Cardinal Infant of Spain to quit the Ecclesiastical State as a Thing very certain. There are People, however, who pretend to be very much in the Secret of Affairs, who say, that every Thing which has been hitherto published thereupon, has, they imagine, been only founded upon Conjectures; and they are the rather induced to believe this, as they have Correspondents at the Courts of Spain, France, and Rome, and none of them say, that any Thing of this Nature is upon the Carpet. On the contrary, they produce Letters, wrote by Persons in high Office in those Courts, which intimate that these Conjectures, they suppose, have been spread abroad by News-Writers copying one another. Many People, nevertheless, still believe that something of this Kind is in Agitation, or that the Reports relating thereto, that have so long been current, would have been positively contradicted by the Court of Spain, seeing that has been done by it in Matters of less Moment.
