FOR THE RHODE-ISLAND AMERICAN.
Mr. GODDARD,
"Bruneosis", in your last, reminds me of an anecdote given me recently by a gentleman near Boston-a graduate of the College in this town. I will give it as nearly in his words as possible.
,"While I was at Andover winter before last, a German gentleman came there to procure employment as an instructor in Greek, Hebrew and the modern European languages. He brought recommendations from the Presidents and Professors of several of our Colleges, where he had visited and been examined. After looking at his certificates, Professor inquired of him if he had been at Brown University. "Brown College," said the German, "no Sir-I not begin with teaching to spell." A doubtful look of Professor brought out this inquiry from the German-"Did never you, Sir. see the list of Brown College?"- "The catalogue of their graduates, do you mean?" "Ah, Sir, the Latin catalogue with one w in it." "That is probably a mistake of the printer." "I ask your pardon, Sir. mistake of two or three printers-printer in 1811 -printer in 1814, and printer in 1817 " A laugh ended the subject of Brown University."
