FRENCH FLYERS PLANNING RACE ACROSS OCEAN

PARIS. Aug. 18. (U.P.)-Possibility of a trans-Atlantic airplane race was developing today with improving flying weather.

The contestants were Dieudonne Coste, who has already flown the south Atlantic to Brazil and Lieut. Paulin Paris, of the French navy.

Paris was ready to hop off in his La Fregate seaplane from Bordeaux. He had planned to start across the Atlantic at dawn today, it was revealed, but reports of fog forced postponement.

Coste was awaiting favorable weather reports to start from Le Bourget airport. Maurice Bellonte was to accompany him in the famous plane Question Mark.

Lieut. Paris' seaplane, La Fregate, carries a 650 horsepower Hispano motor. It is the same machine in which Paris set world seaplane records for long distance and speed.

Paris will be accompanied by Naval Lieut. Henry Nomy, and a radio operator. He plans to hop off from Hourtin Basin, Bordeaux, and to stop at the Azores and Halifax en route to New York. He hopes to make a return non-stop flight from St. Johns Newfoundland, to Bordeaux.

The eastern half of the Atlantic was still foggy today but was clearing sufficiently to make a start of the air race possible at dawn Wednesday. Coste still planned to attempt a direct flight to New York and estimated that he could reach his goal within 33 hours.

Coste gave up hope of starting Tuesday morning and left Le Bourget at 3:30 this afternoon.
