This bill commends itself to all the friends of great enterprises throughout the State. The Bombay Hook railroad is an important link in the great international thoroughfares between Greenland, Smyrna, Mexico and Patagonia, as the Wilmington and Western is between "the city" and the Sandwich Islands, and should receive all the encouragement and assistance that the State can give it.
The idea of "bridging the Delaware" is a noble conception, and as the bay is not much over five miles wide at that point, and the mud flat more than thirty feet deep, the plan is "perfectly feasible."
The amount asked for by Mr. N. may seem large, but when the vast advantage that is to accrue to the State by means of this great through line is taken into the account, the "subsidy" will be seen to be very small. Then, too, our bridge will be the biggest in the world, and what is a hundred millions of dollars compared to such a notoriety as that?
Canada's great Victoria bridge, St. Louis' trans Mississippi bridge and New York's great North River bridge will all be thrown into the shade, and Delaware will become as celebrated for her big bridge as she now is for her peaches, whipping post and public schools.
By all means let Mr. Nowland's bill have favorable consideration and be placed on an equal footing with all the other railroad subsidies. Let them receive the same treatment.
