AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 10.- With the prosecution to demand that he pay with his life for the murder of D. E. Chipps, wealthy lumber man, the Rev. J. Frank Norris, pastor of the First Baptist church of Fort Worth, went on trial here today.
More than 200 witnesses have been summoned to appear and approximately 350 veniremen have been called from whom to select a jury.
Chipps was shot and killed in the study of Norris' church last July. The lumberman had called to protest against the fiery pastor's verbal attacks on Mayor J. O. Meacham of Fort Worth, close friend of Chipps.
Norris claimed self defense at the time and this plea will be used by his counsel in the trial starting today.
