Full Text
On Friday last, Maria Van Valkenburgh, aged about nine years was burnt to death by her clothes accidentally taking fire while engaged near the hearth. She was at a neighboring house where there were two or three children smaller than herself, the mother of whom had just stepped out. Her clothes caught fire behind, and when she discovered it, she rushed precipitately into the street, screaming for help; but so rapid were the flames, being exposed to the air, that before any person could get to her assistance, her clothes were nearly burnt off her back, and the skin burnt to a crisp. The unfortunate girl expired in about 12 or 14 hours.
