What is this article about?
This 1838 editorial mocks the Democratic (Loco-foco) party's claim of victory after Missouri elections, asserting that the defeat of the Sub-Treasury bill was a true win for the people and Conservatives. It warns that Democrats are secretly reviving the unpopular scheme while diverting attention to other issues like banks and Federalism, crediting its failure with economic recovery via specie resumption.

The leading editorial article in the official organ of Monday night, gives notice that the great "expunger" has returned to the city. Frantic with joy at the result of the Missouri elections, he contrasts the first Monday of September 1838 with that of 1837—talks of Biddle bank, shin-plasters, federalists, and renegade republicans, of a severe CONFLICT that was kept up during the whole of the extra session, and until near the end of the stated session—of VICTORY which came at last—of the Government victoriously repulsing depreciated paper from the Treasury—resumption of specie payments—of there being now a hundred millions specie in the country, and that gold and silver is the coin in which the Treasury pays, &c., &c.
The "conflict" that was kept up for nearly a year, was truly an "arduous one;" but the "victory," who won that? It was the people who won it; it was the Administration, and those who supported its measures who were vanquished. Five times was the Sub-Treasury scheme defeated in one shape or another. For that, every "PATRIOT" has full cause for rejoicing. What has become of the Hon. Senator's prophecy, one year ago, that if there was a Democratic party, they would pass the Sub-Treasury at the extra session, and go home in three weeks from the commencement of it! Congress has been in session nine months since, and no Sub-Treasury yet!—Owing to that, the banks have resumed specie payments, and prosperity has again blessed the land.
This "defeated and disgraced" party now come forward and shout victory, victory, to cover their mortification, and hide their shame. Still, however, do they feel it, and deeply too; and they evince it when they talk of "RENEGADE REPUBLICANS;" by which we all know they mean CONSERVATIVES.
THE SUB-TREASURY IS NOT DEAD; ITS FATHERS ARE NURSING IT IN SECRET.
There is one more important act to which we earnestly invite public attention. The Loco-focos know the unpopularity of the Sub-treasury scheme, they know that it has prostrated them wherever they have made it a test before the people, and it is now their conventional policy, by every artifice, to keep it out of public view, and to make their issue upon any other and every other subject they can bring up, rather than this. To divert public attention from this ill-omened star, they attack Federalism, the banks, the moneyed power. Nick Biddle, the Navy, Gov. Ritner, anti-masonry, Mr. Bond, and every thing else upon which their diatribe can be brought to bear. They laud the President's manners, they speak complaisantly of ex-Secretary Dickerson, they discuss the boundary question, they squint at Mexico, they talk about elections, they whitewash each other, and—they get down to Mr. Duncan, and puff his speech!
Mark the fact, throughout this excursive range, not one word is said about the Sub-treasury. Yet the declaration has been made by the official, that upon the ultimate success of this measure depends the fate of the Administration, that they sink or swim with it. This is true to the letter. It is again to be pressed upon Congress with all the force of the party, and if possible, to be fastened upon the country.
Mark another fact. It was not until after Congress had again and again defeated this measure, and left assurance upon the public mind, that it could never become a part of the policy of the Government, that this incubus ceased to paralyze the resources of the whole country. After Congress adjourned, our long suffering land began to wear its wonted smile, and brighter and brighter has it grown to the present hour. But let not the sanguine hope, that the future is all rich with promise, lull us into a false security. "The snake is scotched, not killed." The elections that are yet to take place, are to decide whether this prolific monster with its long train of evils shall again sink this devoted country to the depths of deeper suffering and ruin, or by its total extinction, we shall go on prospering until joy and peace and plenty shall cover the whole land, and our high destiny be reached under the vigilant watch and will of all the people.
