Signals Corps Radiotelephone Achievement Evidence, Splendid Service
Called from his home last night to accept, over the newly installed radiotelephone system, congratulations from Mayor Joseph W. Carson of Portland, Ore., on completion of the new hookup which connected Alaska with the world by telephone, Gov. John W. Troy today was warm in his praise of the United States Signal Corps and the technicians who have made the service possible.
"In the perfection of operations of this great communication system, Capt. Paul S. Edwards of the Signal Corps and the other technicians have done a wonderful job," the Governor said. "It is a continuation of the splendid service the Signal Corps has given us over the years. I have been acquainted with the Signal Corps' service since the turn of the century when the Army gave us communication by the cable. It has always maintained the best of service and always had the public welfare at heart.
The Signal Corps through the years has maintained the policy of being helpful and trying in every way possible to render service to Alaskans.
"It was the wonderful service afforded by the Signal Corps which has made it possible for The Empire to have the excellent news coverage of world events which it has had and caused it to become the foremost paper in Alaska. That same splendid service has been rendered by the Army generally over Alaska.
"It is my belief that the United States Army is one of the greatest organizations in the world. As has been said in the early days, it was the life insurance of the west. It took care of people who had to be taken care of. It has been and is today a vigilant, patriotic, public service organization. This new service now afforded Alaskans is a crowning achievement."
In addition to exchanging greetings with Mayor Carson last night, the Governor also was in communication with former Alaskans, who were at the telephone in Portland. Among them was Thomas Lake, who used to deliver papers for the Governor when the latter published the Skagway Alaskan and is now a florist in Portland.
