The State of Michigan and the City of Detroit are moving to close a private school operated by the Muslims, the Negro cult preaching hatred for all white people.
THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, in a front-page story appearing in the issue of August 14, 1959, said:
State and local authorities moved Thursday to shut down a 102-student "private" school operated for years by a Negro racist cult that openly preaches hatred for all white men.
The action, after three years of indifference, came during a week-long Free Press probe of the school's operations.
A state police sergeant, an agent of the State Department of Public Instruction, two Buildings and Safety Engineering Department inspectors, a Health Department investigator and a Detroit Fire Department inspector poked through the musty, crumbling former theater building at 5403 John C. Lodge.
They said they would "recommend" that the cult—calling itself Muhammad's Temple of Islam No. 1—be barred from holding further elementary or high-school classes in the building.
Advised of the impending action, "Brother Wilfred X" (Wilfred E. Little, of 4336 S. Williams, Inkster) local leader of the cult, said he knew nothing of the school's operations and referred all questions to "national headquarters" in Chicago.
As the move to close the school from a safety standpoint got underway, authorities in Lansing started trying to check the qualifications of the five instructors at the school.
Deputy Supt. of Public Instruction Eugene Grimm said his department also will try to find out what subjects are taught at the school.
