LATE FROM SOUTH OF EUROPE
Capt. Freeman arrived since our last from the Mediterranean, left Malta the 17th May, and informs, that a vessel which left Egypt, the 27th ult. had arrived at Malta with intelligence, that Gen. Baird with 6000 troops, had reached Suez from India: That every exertion was making at Malta to reinforce and supply the army in Egypt, and that the corps of Conde had arrived at Malta, to do duty there:-- That Gantheaume's squadron, by the last accounts, was at the island of Elba, in the Tuscan Sea-- Capt F. brought letters from Mr. Cathcart, to the Secretary of State, dated in April, and observe, that the Bey of Tripoli had not declared war against the United States, although a number of his privateers were out, two had sailed from Malta three days previous to capt F's arrival at that place, a large prize ship, Swedish, mounting 20 guns was then fitting out, no American vessel had been captured by them-- We are further informed by capt. F. that the great exertions are making by the French, in all the Neapolitan and Sicilian ports, to strengthen their works, to augment their maritime force, and to prevent the English from having any trade or succour in these places.
